How To Train Your Employees to be 'Well Rounded'

The daily tasks conducted in a business are often overwhelm-
ing for most business owners. Finding the time to sell
company products or services, manage accounts, deal with
customer service, and conduct meetings is near impossible
with today's high demands. Yet, we ponder through our days
working on one task at a time and hope that tomorrow will
shed a new light on the stress we face today.
There are numerous ways for employees to add to their skill
set such as continuing education courses or online classes.
But, these methods pale in comparison to the knowledge they
receive from competent trainers giving them hands-on
instruction which is why most benefit from this kind of
training. The ability to see the knowledge yield real
world results is very motivating. If, at the end of the
day, the employee is both happier and better trained, why
not invest the time to give them this training?
There are two primary options you can choose from to
provide this type of hands-on training. The first is to
hire a professional trainer who specializes in training
workers in your field. The other is to have a current
employee with exceptional skills and leadership qualities
to conduct the training. Either option will work well.
A Superior Method of Training Employees
Trainers often teach a group of people verses an individual.
This method of training is more beneficial and allows the
trainer to cover a wider area of job skills. Training
material is passed to each employee for future reference and
work shops are conducted in 'real time' for a hands-on feel
for the job.
If you want an employee to be great at selling your
products or services, then they must be familiar with
selling techniques. Sales requires some delicate skills
and a lot of practice. There are naturals but there are
always those that catch on faster than most.
Thorough training in sales involves a careful study of the
products or services being sold and how they are superior
to what the competition is offering. You have to make sure
that the trainees understand that potential clients are all
different and will be motivated by different factors to
make a purchase. Time will have to be devoted to training
employees to handle the varying personalities of customers
to avert problems that may arise in the future.
An administrative assistant typically will help with
account management and customer service activities. Any
sales training should involve the tasks and skills involved
in performing AA duties. You are not trying to eliminate
any positions by doing this but are actually giving you the
ability to position employees in different jobs should
situations arise where it would be necessary for people to
cover for sick or vacationing coworkers.
Continuous Training in Sales
The training should never end when the trainer is done with
the class. Monthly meetings are a great opportunity to
provide up-to-date sales training. This will afford you an
opportunity to show the people 'what is new' and how
precisely the newly introduced product works. This
information should be shared with everyone in the meeting
so all employees are more knowledgeable about the company
and the products and services it provides. Do not be
afraid to use e-mails and newsletters to keep information
fresh in the minds of associates.
Acquiring a team of professionals that work well together
will take time. There is no magical wand you can wave to
make things easier today, but you can invest in a trainer to
keep your team of employees on track. Ultimately, your
business will benefit from your efforts.
