What To Look For In Travel Insurance

Travelling broadens the mind - it is a cliche but true.
Needless to say, things do not always run smoothly, so
putting time aside to sort out the contingency - the travel
insurance - helps us concentrate on the mind broadening
aspects of travel and really have a good time.
The first thing to remember is insurance is not an excuse
to behave like a fool. Just because you have travel
insurance does not mean you should do things that you would
not do at home. For instance, if at home you would not ride
a motorized scooter without a helmet, do not do it on
holiday!
In order to get a better deal there are some things that
your should bear in mind. If the holiday company that you
are using has the option for insurance do not opt for it
without considering others, as it may not be the best or
the cheapest.
So make a few telephone calls or web inquiries with the
independent travel insurance specialists. Also ask with
your credit card company and the firm that hold your
household policy. Both of these entities may already be
covering you for some elements of your trip. It is good
practice to book flights and so on by credit card for just
this reason - the odds are that you will automatically be
insured for flight cancellations. Check with these
companies anyway, since some companies give good deals to
existing customers.
There are some elements that you should be covered for by
travel insurance, especially such things are property loss
including money and documents and theft. You should
consider the value of the items you are taking, as most
insurance covers have a limit on the amount you can claim.
Statistics suggest that many people do not end up needing
to claim on their travel insurance so it would be unwise to
pay for many thousands of dollars worth of over if the
items in your luggage only come to a few hundred dollars.
However, if you are taking anything expensive it may be
worth paying insurance in case anything unfortunate
happens.
If you know that valuable or specialist equipment (like
camera gear) is going to be on your kit list then arrange
special cover for this. If you do not let the insurance
company know then they will not pay up if the need arises -
you end up losing out, not the insurer.
In the same way, if you plan to do some adventurous
activities like scuba diving or motorcycling, take out a
policy that covers them - many travel insurance policies do
not. If you choose not to tell the company about your plans
then you are not covered and you may as well have done
without insurance altogether.
Medical cover is important, and in some parts of the world
more than others so ensure that the cover you have taken
out is suitable for your chosen destination.
When you are overseas or away from home and get into
difficulties you will have to contact your insurers, so be
happy that this is going to be easy - ask them how you
would do it, should you need to. Make sure that you do not
lose any reports you file with police, any bills you incur
with a doctor or the receipts for anything you had to buy
due to lost luggage or whatever.
Remember that the insurance policy should be a last resort,
so do not place all your faith in the policy. Try to take
every sensible precaution - keep copies of your passport,
travellers check numbers and so on; be sensible with your
money; use the hotel strongboxes for valuables; do not
drink water that you are not confident about; and make sure
you get any shots you need before you go! Make sure you
have a good time.
