Trucks in the US

Many people say the are confused the phenomena of Monster
Trucks - they do not understand it! But trucks are fairly
fundamental to the history of America.
They are not, however, an American invention. Trucks, which
as anyone might have guessed, are derived from motor cars,
first showed up in Germany towards the end of the
nineteenth century. At that time Germany, along with Great
Britain, was one of the main industrial powers in the
world, so it is not so surprising that trucks were invented
there.
To begin with (say in 1895) you would have seen two
competing trucks - one petrol driven and the other steam
driven! Oh yes, there were plenty of trucks putting around
the world with coal in their bellies! In fact they were
popular and did not die out until just before World War
Two.
It was also a German, Benz (of Mercedes Benz of course)
that brought in diesel as a fuel - the fuel made economic
sense being cheaper and making the engines last longer.
These improved trucks came in 1924.
Jeeps from the US and their 4WD truck cousins, also US
built, worked very well during World War Two, and marked
the beginning of US dominance in the big truck world.
During the fifties tractors were made that tilted and the
big trucks we see now began to make their mark. They moved
essentials the length and breadth of the country. These
huge vehicles are certainly iconic and have been made the
star of innumerable songs and movies.
The home market for trucks has changed a lot in recent
decades. Pickups remain popular but have become more
powerful, speedier and with all the comforts of the sedan.
Moreover the sedan itself has grown, approaching truck
size, and maybe overtaking truck size in some cases!
So big are some of the truck based family motors that they
are used to draw political battle lines. Vehicles have
often had this effect - once upon a time the difference
between a city slicker and someone from hicksville was the
pickup truck. These days there are arguments between those
with massive family cars for driving their kids to school
and those who want to see cars getting smaller and using
less fuel.
It is hard to imagine that any other nation can compare
with the USA when it comes to huge cars. This is why a
crowd can always be guaranteed whenever the owner of those
marvels of engineering, the Monster Truck, brings out their
pride and joy.
