The Invention of Cars
by Antieb Schinell

Cars are a necessity, these days, because of the long
distances people have to travel for their day-to-day
affairs, such going to work, school or anywhere else. Most
Americans own two or more cars. The story of how cars came
into existence is very interesting, as you will see from
the following summary.
The first self-propelled vehicle, which was powered by a
steam engine, was invented in 1769 by a French engineer
named Nicolas Joseph Cugnot. The vehicle, which was a
military tractor, was used by the French army for
transporting artillery. The year 1770 saw the invention of
another vehicle by the same man. This vehicle weighed 4.5
tons, had three wheels and iron tires, and could carry four
passengers. But, as fate would have it, in 1771 the
inventor met with an accident while riding the only
existing prototype of the vehicle. Nonetheless, soon the
project was taken up by the English, who created around 40
vehicles and tractors by 1840.
A German named Etienne Lenoir got the first
internal-combustion engine patented in his name, in 1860.
Six years later, a German Gottlieb Daimler built the first
internal-combustion engine car. The weight of this
vehicle's prototype was nearly two tons. And later, the
same Daimler created another that weighed 90 pounds. Few
years down the line saw Karl Benz designing the first
three-wheeled automobile having an internal combustion
engine. It was patented in 1886. The year 1893 marked the
invention of the first four-wheeled automobile, again by
Karl Benz. So, Benz was the first automobile industry.
In the 19th century many other industries started building
better brakes and other parts and improved the cars. In
1897, Rudolph Diesel designed the first self-ignition
engine. Since Eilhard had already discovered petrol in
1883, fuel was no problem and liquid hydrocarbon was also
available. The car industry progressed very fast thereon.
The young French, Louis Renault built his first car in his
parents' garage. The American, Henry Ford designed his
self-propelled four-wheeled vehicle in 1892. In 1903, Ford
set up his own company to manufacture cars. He succeeded in
his goal to produce an efficient and affordable car, the
Ford T in 1908. His car became more popular in 1913, when
the car became even less expensive because Henry Ford
established an assembly line in his large factory at
Highland Park. Ford sold more than 150,00,000 Ford Ts in
twenty years from 1908 to 1928!
Other companies like Volkswagen, Porsche, Peugeot, Citroen
and Ferrari and others came up with new models and parts.
Thus, the journey of the car industry has been through many
cars over many years to come up to the modern automobile we
are familiar with.
