If you want to keep your precious jewelry looking
great for years to come you~ll want learn how to
clean each piece safely and easily. Different types
of jewelry require different cleaning techniques
since they are each composed of their own elements
and compositions of metal. You~ll need to learn
how to maintain and clean your jewelry so that each
separate piece gets the care that it needs.

Gold is one of the most common types of jewelry
and requires careful cleaning to protect it from
harsh chemicals. You can make your own gold
cleaning solution out of mild dish soap that is gentle
enough to use while still being strong enough to
clean. Let the gold sit in the solution of soap and
water for about 30 minutes before scrubbing it
gently with a soft toothbrush. After cleaning with
the soap solution make sure that you rinse the gold
and thoroughly dry it. When it comes to the
maintenance of your gold jewelry you should try
not to wear it in swimming pools or in the shower.

If you have silver jewelry that is tarnished, you will
need to purchase a special solution that specifically
made for tarnished silver. This type of solution can
be found at any grocery store and is easy to use.
For some types of silver jewelry you may need a
silver cleaning paste to really get it clean. When
using this type of paste only use a gentle cloth to
clean the silver since a brush may scratch the
surface. For simple maintenance silver can be
rinsed under warm water and dried. As with gold,
silver should also be kept out of chlorinated water.

Pearls will need to be cleaned very gently so that
they aren~t scratched. Use a soft cloth that has been
dipped into a mild solution of dish soap and water.
Make sure that you never soak your pearls in any
solution since this can cause the string that is
keeping the pearls together to become stretched and
weak. When you~re wearing your pearls make sure
that any hairspray or makeup that you apply doesn~t
touch the pearls since they can become discolored.

Most precious stones such as diamonds, emeralds,
rubies, and sapphires should also be cleaned using a
gentle dish soap and water solution. Never use
anything abrasive or harsh on your jewelry since the
risk of scratching is great. Always remember to be
gentle with your jewelry.

For those pieces of jewelry that are hard to clean, or
that are particularly tarnished, you may want to pay
a jeweler to do the cleaning for you so that you
avoid damaging the metal and gems. Jewelers will
charge you a small fee for cleaning rings, necklaces,
bracelets, earrings, and other pieces of jewelry.
